52 MTM700/MTM800 Mobile Terminal / Installation Manual INSTALLATION
Expansion Head Radio Installation
General
The Expansion Head Radio is a kit consisting of the MTM700/MTM800 transceiver-box and an
Expansion Head, which fits onto the front of the MTM700/MTM800 mobile terminal transceiver.
The Expansion Head Radio is used e.g. when the transceiver-box is controlled by a
- Motorcycle Control Head where the Motorcycle Control Head interfaces to the SB9600 port of the
Expansion Head or via Y-Adapter to the ESBEB port (Chinese version Motorcycle Control Head).
- Remote Standard Control Head when access to the full 8-wire RS232 interface of the Expansion
Head is also required.
- Control Terminal via the SB9600 interface for e.g. PC based dispatch solutions or train/bus appli-
cations where a Standard Control Head is not required.
The Transceiver-box with its Expansion Head can be mounted in the vehicles DIN size opening.
In case of motorcycle operation (e.g. public safeties) the Expansion Head Radio is mounted in a
separate trunnion which is not part of the Expansion Head Radio kit.
In this installation version the radio unit (Transceiver with Expansion Head) is mounted at the back of
the motorcycle and the control head is mounted at the front on the fuel tank or the handlebars.

Planning
Planning is the key to fast, easy radio installation. Before a hole is drilled or a wire is run, inspect the
vehicle and determine how and where you intend to mount the antenna, radio, and accessories.
Plan wire and cable runs to provide maximum protection from pinching, crushing, and overheating.
The installation planning should only be undertaken by persons who are competent and able to
ensure that the complete installation fulfils its regulatory requirements, such as EMC (ElectroMag-
netic Compatibility).
The following list of considerations should, as a minimum, be checked during installation planning:
1. The recommended place for the transceiver is to place it in the box at the back of the
motorcycle.
2. Mount the control head horizontally at a position which enables the driver to view the controls
and operate them easily.
3. Be sure the control head is close enough to the vehicle operator to permit easy access to
operating controls.
4. It is recommended to mount the control head directly on the chassis or handle part.
5. Ensure that the units mounted in the motorcycle box are protected from dirt and moisture.
6. Ensure that the radio trunnion is grounded.
